When I Beckoned
a little dallying,
a little dillying,
and the wants began to grow.
quiet at first,
like weeds beneath a fence,
like roots learning the shape of the dark.
i fed them with glances,
watered them with excuses,
called them harmless things.
days passed.
The wants grew taller than reason,
hung heavier than restraint.
and when the hunger could no longer
sit still inside my chest,
i stretched out my hand and beckoned.
i thought some angel of mercy would answer.
I thought desire would come dressed as a blessing.
but from the shadows came a voice i knew too late.
for a little dallying,
and a little dillying,
had taught the devil my name.
